6 Skin Care Trends to Watch for in 2020

At Estelle Skin Care & Spa Institute in Chicago, we make it our priority to stay alert to the hottest products and trends in the skin care industry. This awareness helps us give our students a cutting-edge education that will help them become the skin care industry leaders of tomorrow. Since the new year is nearly here, we thought it was high time to start exploring skin care trends to watch for in 2020.

CBD Skin Care
You might have heard the term “CBD” sometime in 2019, but what exactly does this acronym mean? CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is the non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. While scientists are only beginning to skim the surface when it comes to potential health benefits of CBD, CBD has shown great promise in treating a variety of conditions, including depression, muscle pain, anxiety, and more. Lately, the CBD trend has converged with the skin care industry, in the form of countless lotions, creams, salves, and specialty treatments. CBD-infused skin care ranges from bespoke CBD massages to full-spectrum face serums. While the jury is still out on how exactly CBD can benefit your skin, medical cannabis experts theorize that cannabidiol may be beneficial in managing rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions.

Waterless Skin Care
This trend originates in Asia, where cosmetic companies will often use botanicals as the basis of their skin care products, rather than water. Water-based products can actually strip your natural oil barrier, making your skin more prone to buildup. Additionally, botanical extracts are full of vitamins and antioxidants that can penetrate and fortify your skin. Another appeal of waterless skin care is that these products do not add to the worldwide water crisis. As beauty consumers become more and more ethical, the skin care industry must find innovative ways to satisfy customers’ needs while being compassionate towards the planet.

Unisex Products
As the world becomes more inclusive of all genders and ethnicities, so does the skin care industry. We’ve already seen a surge in unisex moisturizers, cleansers, deodorants, and more, but expect this trend to continue into 2020. As more and more men begin to seek out skin care products and treatments, it is important that estheticians learn how to best accommodate their changing clientele.

Ceramides
Ceramides are all-natural lipids that help to form the skin’s barrier and retain moisture. They are a prized ingredient in skin care products, thanks to their intensely hydrating effect and anti-aging properties. Ceramides are great additions to any skin care routine looking to target aging, acne or dry skin. Expect to see an increase in products containing ceramides in 2020, including oral supplements.

Coffee Scrubs
While coffee scrubs have been popular for some time now, we only expect this trend to get bigger come 2020. Coffee scrubs provide a great way to reduce inflammation, puffiness, and cellulite, while increasing your skin’s circulation and giving you a youthful glow. Unlike chemical exfoliates, coffee scrubs do not remove skin cells with enzymes or acidic products.

Growth Factors
Growth factors are natural proteins made by your skin that help increase collagen, elastins, and blood flow. By your late twenties, collagen production begins to drop off, leading to sagging skin. Growth factors, when applied regularly, can help restore your skin’s youthful vibrance. The growth factors found in skin care products can either be human (culled from stem cells) or synthetic, and different people will have different preferences about which source they are most comfortable with.
